Chapter 9 Summary

On the morning that they plan to marry, the sheriff arrests Happy, Bess and Willie.

While they all spend time in jail, Mr. Endner bails Bess out, while Happy and Willie remain in jail until the trial months later. Bess ends up testifying that everything was her idea and she makes a deal with the prosecutor. Happy and Willie both spend time in jail for the robbery and for kidnapping Bess. At the end of the year, Willie is released from prison but Bess's family sent her to Hamburg to live with her family in Germany.

Eddie gets Happy and Willie jobs at the shipyard where he is working. Willie also gets his own place because his parents are disgraced by his arrest and time spent in jail. When Willie gets laid off from this job, he rations his savings, but this also...
