Chapter 2 Summary

Sutton is sitting in his hotel room at The Plaza. He's been up all night smoking Chesterfields and drinking champagne. He's also been thinking about Bess, but he hasn't opened the envelope Donald gave him yet. Sutton thinks he's dying because he's experiencing all of the signs the doctor says he would in the final stages.

Reporter arrives with coffee and bagels. Sutton shows Reporter a map of the route they have to take for him to tell Reporter his story. Reporter starts to say they don't have time for all this, but agrees to it when Sutton says it's all or nothing. They take the elevator downstairs.

They get into a car with the photographer from the newspaper. He's going to be driving them around while the reporter takes down Sutton's story. The reporter shows the photographer the map and tells them...
