Chapter 5 Summary

Bonnie calls the answering machine in New York as soon as she and Augustine arrive at his house. Later, Augustine calls a friend at the FBI while Bonnie sleeps. In the middle of the night Bonnie wakes and finds Augustine's collection of skulls, and she impresses him by not becoming frightened or disgusted by the sight. Augustine then tells Bonnie that the FBI will not take Max's kidnapping seriously until a ransom demand is made, suggesting that Max's message might be a ruse to cover up his desire to end his marriage.
