Chapter 1 Summary

When the chapter opens it is the first day of high school in Mica, Arizona, Leo's friend Kevin asks him , " Did you see her?" Kevin is referring to the new girl who is all the buzz . He tells Leo about the new girl with the strange name of Stargirl Caraway. When Kevin finally sees her in the lunchroom he can't believe his eyes. She is wearing a long off-white gown with ruffles around the neck and hem and she is carrying a ukulele (a small four- string Hawaiian guitar), and a canvas bag with a sunflower design on it. Kevin tells Leo that Stargirl is in the 10th grade and has been home schooled until now.
