Summary

In Chapter 9, Lois realized that she could not fulfil Chef Kate’s request in time with the small oven she had, so Lois found a blog about baking ovens, and she found instructions about how to construct a cheap one known as the “Jay Steve Value Oven” (59). Lois borrowed Cornelia’s car to gather the resources necessary from a hardware store, and started to build the oven in the shared garden of her apartment complex. While Lois was building the oven, Cornelia sporadically watched her, asking about Lois’s new obsession with baking. By nightfall, Lois had built the oven and started a fire within it, which separated the smog and revealed stars. This chapter ends with another email from Beoreg. He wrote about the Mazg, describing their main characteristics, which were their music, their “reticence” (66), and their sourdough starter.
