Summary
In Chapter 30, Samuel called Hannah to tell her where Mamush was. Then the hotel clerk called to say a taxi was outside for Mamush. Mamush discovered a man named Theo waiting for him. Theo was Samuel’s friend and worked for his cross-country taxi service. Mamush reluctantly accepted his ride to Indiana, where he dropped him off to wait for another driver.
In Chapter 31, Mamush studies Samuel’s manuscript, wondering if it contains some explanation for Samuel’s death. His mother and Elsa believe Samuel “would have left a note” (211). Mamush imagines a conversation with Samuel where he tells Mamush not to give the manuscript to his mother and to show it to Elsa first instead. He imagines telling Elsa about it and all the questions she would ask.
In Chapter 32, the next driver, Robert, drove Mamush from Gary, Indiana to Cleveland, Ohio...
