Summary

In Chapter 13, worried the men from the hall will break into the bedroom, Mamush studies the road outside the house. He wonders where Samuel’s car is, remembering that Samuel never parked in the garage or near home. He often lost his keys too, especially when he was inebriated. Mamush opens the dresser and finds Samuel’s keys before heading downstairs.

In Chapter 14, at the courthouse, Mamush explained what he was looking for, posing as an investigative journalist. The clerk asked about his relationship to Samuel but Mamush withheld who he was to him.

In Chapter 15, Mamush chats with Elsa and the two men from the hall. One man, Stephanos, talks extensively about how much Samuel loved Mamush. Mamush pretends to understand everything he is saying in Amharic. Samuel taught Mamush some of the language, but he “was a terrible teacher” (121). Mamush can...
