Sobig

Sobig is Dirk's nickname. When he is very young, his mother would ask him to tell her how big he is. Dirk stretches out his arms and says, “So big.” The nickname sticks and Selina often uses it until Dirk objects that he has outgrown it. Even when he is an adult, she sometimes slips up and uses the nickname.

Cabbage

Fields of cabbages are the first crop Selina sees on her way to High Prairie and she is enthralled by their beauty. She tells Klaas Pool that the cabbages are pretty but he doesn't see anything more than hard work and a potential cash crop. Though Selina works hard all her life, she always sees the beauty in things, especially in fields of cabbages.
