Summary

In Chapter 19, "Heterosexual Men Love Me," Eva let Shane up to the apartment. Initially Shane was surprised to see Audre. Then he, Eva, and Audre shared an unexpectedly pleasant morning. Shane explained that he and Eva had been friends for years and would "always be friends, no matter how much time [went] by" (209). His words inspired Eva and Shane to talk openly about their friendship. Afterwards, Audre showed Shane her art.

Outside, Eva and Shane talked more. Eva asked him about her movie. He agreed that her characters could not be played by white actors. Then they began discussing their friendship again. Eva explained the importance of her closeness with Audre and her fear of Shane leaving again. Finally Shane said that the only reason he had left when they were children was because Lizette had sent him away (218).
