Cecelia 'Lia' Beaumont Pike

Cecelia Beaumont Pike is an eighteen-year-old girl living in the 1930s. Cecelia's mother died when she was born causing Cecelia to live her life filled with the guilt associated with this death. Now Cecelia is pregnant herself and convinced that like her own mother, she too will die. This conviction causes Cecelia a great deal of emotional pain in her life. For this reason, Cecelia tends toward suicidal tendencies. In fact, when Cecelia begins to tell her story, it begins on the day after she has attempted to slice her wrist in a suicide attempt. This behavior brings out the controlling, unpleasant side of her husband. Spencer believes the best way to treat Cecelia's behaviors is to ignore them, but to also keep Cecelia under close observation.
