Julia
Julia is the protagonist of the novel. She had a difficult childhood. She did not know it at the time, but her father was married and had two children while he was in a relationship with her mother. Eventually he stops coming to see her. She always thought it was because he did not want to see her, but she does not learn until she is 17 years old that he actually died six years prior. Her relationship with her mother is strained. Her mother drinks too much and works a lot to support them. She is not emotionally available. Anita and Julia are happy during Julia’s seventeenth year because Anita is happily in a relationship with a man named Jonathan. Jonathan and Julia eventually have a sexual relationship with Anita ultimately finds out about.
