Summary

In Chapter 9, when Annemarie drops Eva off at Dan’s barn, she stays for a tour. Dan leads her around the barn showing her the horses and the pictures of them when they first arrived. There are none that Annemarie would have believed would survive. Dan also introduces Annemarie to Flicka, an Arabian who is Eva’s favorite. He is surprised Annemarie has not heard about her.

Back at the barn, one of the stable hands warns Annemarie the supply of hay and shavings has gotten very low. He also asks her to help to put the jumps back up. He took them down to drag the arena and has been confronted by an irate boarder who wants to use the jumps.

The boarder, who introduces herself as Dr. Jessica Berman, demands to know what happened to Ursula (Mutti), Annemarie’s mother. She...
