Summary

Stage directions detail the placement of Public, Private, Madge, and S.B. as they say their rosary. As the others pray, Private imagines the circumstances of Gar saying the rosary in America, and then imagines the details of Gar’s new life as a free, sometimes mysterious bachelor. He then imagines the love life and relationship that will end Gar’s bachelorhood.

Madge then interrupts, telling Public to take his turn in leading the prayer. Public and Private pray together for a moment, then Private again speaks. He wonders whether S.B. actually does recall his relationship with Maire, and whether he recalls a happy moment they spent together as father and son a long time ago – specifically, a day spent sitting in a blue boat, fishing on a lake.
