Summary

Episode II begins with Public lying on his bed, daydreaming, and then snapping back into packing when Private urges him on. He encourages Public to keep going by telling bad jokes, singing raunchy songs, and telling him he would make a great President, or businessman, or union leader, or film star, or senator. Public continues to pack, rejecting all options. Private tries to engage him in some more game/role play, but Public does not join in at first. Only when Private starts mocking S.B. does Public join in. Their banter falls quiet for a moment as Madge comes in, does a bit of tidying, and then goes out. Public goes quiet for a moment, and Private taunts him for “collecting memories and images and impressions that are going to make [him] bloody miserable” (40), and suggesting that that misery is what...
