Summary

The action is continuous. Gar, both Public and Private, bursts into the kitchen along with his three friends – loudmouthed leader Ned, watchful follower Tom, and friendly Joe. Their noisy arguing about football and girls is quickly interrupted by Madge, who warns them to be quiet and to make sure that S.B. does not see them drinking. After she goes the arguing continues, occasionally becoming more pointed than playful. At one point, Public references the fact that he is leaving the next day, but Ned quickly changes the subject, telling a story about encounters he and other friends have had with local girls, one of which he says Gar was not present for.

In a brief silence, Private comments that he was in fact there, and that the fun with local girls that Ned described was actually a confrontation between friends...
