Summary
Anna's and Tom's parents were baffled by their decision to move to Germany and could not understand why they did not do what they were doing in their home city instead. They did not understand the nature of their employment and feared, correctly, that the unpredictable nature of their careers was not allowing them to plan financially for the future. Anna and Tom assuaged their fears by revealing their income. However, he guiltily kept it a secret that they were telling them their earnings before tax. Their parents suspected, again correctly, that the couple was supplementing their lifestyle from the money Anna was left by her grandfather, in the hope she would use it as a down payment on a house.
