Summary

Chapter 15 takes place in Toronto, when Mia was still alive. Soot, Mia, and Tasha go for a walk. They see a woman on the waterfront who seems to be in distress. Mia stops to ask her if she is alright. Interpreting this through the lens of what happens in the future, Soot tries to stop he engaging with the woman, whose name is Vivian. Soot suggests that meeting Vivian, who is suicidal, is what puts the idea of suicide into Mia’s head. Neither Mia nor Tasha understand what Soot is talking about and insist on helping Vivian. In the narration, Soot recalls that after Mia’s death, Vivian called him and asked if it was her fault and Soot had replied that of course it was not. He found himself trying to blame Vivian even though he knew it was not true...
