Ellay

The novel takes place in "ellay," or Los Angeles. The mountain lion lives in the Hollywood Hills until they catch on fire. While in the hills, the mountain lion spends his time eavesdropping on hikers and trying his best to stay fed and hydrated. After the hills catch on fire, the mountain lion runs through the smoke for several days before finally reaching the abandoned city. He finds a zoo and jumps inside a koala's enclosure and eats the animal, kiki, because he is starving. When the zookeepers arrive, he runs away and hides in some bushes in a residential area. He makes himself at home in the backyard of a man named "slaughter" who has a teenage daughter, "little slaughter," who is into witchcraft and rebellion. She feeds the mountain lion and brings him into her room, where he lives for several weeks until he is discovered...
