Summary

In Chapter I the narrator, who is later revealed to be named Teresa, recounts her first visit to a small town in Greece, several years earlier. Teresa had imagined a very specific scenario and drove around looking for a town that matched what she had envisioned in her head. Eventually, she found exactly the right place. Looking back at what she wrote in her notebook on the day she arrived in the town, she notices that she did not mention her recently deceased mother, nor her first encounter with a local named Petros. The notebook contained descriptions of her hotel room and an account of messages she received from a man named Tom, reminiscing about vacations they had taken together in the past.
