Summary

Lucy and William met at LaGuardia Airport for their trip. The sight of him broke Lucy's heart (99). He looked tired, and his clothes were ill-fitting.

They arrived in Bangor, Maine late that night. In the Bangor airport, Lucy felt "a strange sense of something surreal" (102). In the hotel, Lucy and William tried settling in. Something about Lucy's room unsettled her. There was a comb in the bathroom that reminded her of her father. Feeling unnerved, Lucy "knocked on William's door" (103). In William's room, they discussed their itinerary.

Back in her room, Lucy "dreamed of Park Avenue Robbie," a man with whom she had had a brief affair (105).
