Odder is the main character of the novel. She is an otter who is born in Monterey Bay to her mother, Ondine. As a pup, Odder wants nothing more than to be with her mother all the time. Her mother is exhausted by her because Odder is always moving around and is so curious about the world around her. Because of this, Ondine names her Odder, because she is quite unusual and feisty for just a little otter pup. While hunting for clams, Ondine leaves Odder tied up in seaweed. However, a storm blows in and Odder is swept away by the sea onto the shore. Scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium find and rescue her. They search for her mother, hoping to return Odder to the sea immediately, but they cannot find her, so they take Odder back to the aquarium to take care of...
