Summary

The narrator explains that otters dream about swimming and losing their thick fur and being unable to crack a shell open when they are asleep. Ondine had dreamt of a newborn pup who was with a full-grown Odder. Odder was not related to the pup, but she was related to the pup somehow. The pup kept demanding her attention, and Odder kept diving down into the sea to escape her cries. Whenever she surfaced, the Odder pup cried for her, but she did not know how to teach the pup, so she dove again. Ondine watched from afar in her dream.

Ondine forced herself to forget about her dream and dove down to find food while Odder was tied up int the seaweed. Odder waited impatiently, wishing she could be with her mother every second...
