Summary
There is concern in the town because mysterious lights were seen in the cemetery the previous night.
Tasio is very ill. He sends for Crisóstomo.
Father Salví rushes to the ensign's house. In Confession, a woman told him that there would be a raid on the village by revolutionaries that very evening. The ensign flies into a panic, and is guided to action by Father Salví.
Elías rushes to Crisóstomo's home and tells him to burn all his letters and writing. Elías knows that Crisóstomo is not associated with the violence that is about to occur, but that the clergy and army will try to pin it on him, and will go through all his letters to find anything incriminating. While burning the letters, Elías finds a document from a man named Don Pedro Eibarramendía. Shocked...
