Summary
Elías arrives at Crisóstomo's house to inform him that María Clara is ill. The Doctor de Espadaña and his wife, Doña Victorina arrive. The couple got married late in life, in a marriage of convenience. She is a wealthy native Filipina, who desires power and prestige. He is originally from Spain, and actually has no medical training, but desired wealth and comfort. The de Espadañas bring their nephew, Alfonso Linares, to the house. Originally from Spain, Linares has been sent for as a potential new fiancé for María Clara. Captain Tiago has cancelled her engagement to Crisóstomo because he is at odds with the church and labeled a subversive.
María Clara lies in bed, unconscious and sick, worrying everyone. Father Dámaso is especially concerned about her health.
