Point of View

This novel is told from the third-person point of view of an omniscient narrator but the focus centers on different characters in different parts of the novel. The entire first part of the novel, for instance, is told with a focus on Augie, one of the people who are killed by Mr. Mercedes at the job fair. The majority of the remainder of the novel is told with a focus on either Brady or Hodges. The author switches back and forth between these two focuses as he tells the stories of Brady and Hodges as they try to outsmart and out-frustrate each other. There are also short pieces of the story where Jerome and Holly serve as the focus of the story.
