The Shadow of Death. August 23, 1936. Abilene leaves Miss Sadie's house, taking her compass with her under the belief that she has finally served her final day. Abilene goes to the grave she found while frog hunting and sees her own father's name on it. Abilene then studies the compass and realizes what she thought was the date of manufacture and the company name is actually the place and date of Ned Gillen's death. Abilene also makes the connection between Ned's death and her own near fatal illness and understands Gideon's reaction.
