Miss Sadie's Divining Parlor. May 30, 1936. Abilene stands at the gate to Miss Sadie's with Lettie and Ruthanne. They warn her against going in, but Abilene knows this is the only way she will ever get her compass back. Abilene finds Miss Sadie outside. Miss Sadie wants Abilene to begin turning over the soil in her garden to prepare for the year's planting. Abilene cannot imagine Miss Sadie will ever get anything to grow in the dry soil. As she works, Abilene asks questions about Ned and Jinx that she hopes will get Miss Sadie talking again. Abilene learns that Ned arranged for Jinx to live with Shady and the two become good friends.
