Summary

In Chapter 72, in Peggy’s room at the hospital, Penn asks his mother if she went to Viola’s house the day that Viola died. He wants to know if Tom lied on the stand to protect her. When she finally answers him, she says that she knew something strange was going on the weeks leading up to Viola’s death. One night she followed Tom to Cora’s house. She had known about the affair back in 1968. Peggy had followed Tom then to the house where Tom had Viola hidden after she was raped the second time, and recognized Viola through a crack in the door. Peggy had been afraid that Tom would leave his family for Viola.
