Summary

In Chapter 56, Quentin calls Will Devine as his next witness and Will is escorted into the courtroom by FBI agents. There is anticipation that Will’s testimony against Snake will get the murder charge pending against Tom expunged. Will testifies that he knew Frank Knox and that he was a member of his Double Eagle group. He shows his gold piece as proof that he was a member of the Double Eagles. When Quentin asks Will about Viola Turner, Will jerks strangely in his chair. He stands straight up for a moment, jerking spasmodically, and then falls to the floor, bent double. Tom is allowed to go to him to provide medical assistance.

The judge orders everyone to sit and asks that the officers evacuate the courtroom. As he crouches by Will, Tom tells Penn he believes Will was killed with cyanide. Meanwhile...
