Chapters 14-17 Summary

In chapter fourteen, Julia spends a quiet Sunday afternoon, trying to forget about Little Lloyd and her feelings of unease about Brother Vern. Sam arrives and Julia tells him that her troubles have been solved, but the lawyer knows that she is not happy. Sam suggests that Deputy Bates can contact the Raleigh police and check around to make sure that the boy is safe.

The following morning Sam and Lillian arrive at the same time. Lillian is not pleased with Julia for allowing the boy to go off with his uncle. Julia feels guilty enough. Sam suggests she go fishing with him to get her mind off things, but Julia thinks this is a foolish idea. Deputy Bates arrives home after a busy night and tells Julia that Sheriff Frady will be coming over to question her about Little Lloyd...
