Los Angeles

Los Angeles is the city in California where the novel is set. This is also the place where Hannah grew up. Almost immediately after graduating from college, Hannah moved away to Boston. Over the course of the following years, she lived in various cities, including Portland, Austin, and New York.

At the novel's start, Hannah moves away from New York and returns to Los Angeles. After Hannah's heartbreaking breakup with Michael, Gabby suggests that Hannah return home. Hannah is unsure that she still feels attached to the city, but heeds Gabby's advice. She soon rediscovers a sense of family, home, and belonging in this location.
