Summary

In “5 a.m.,” Jay realized he did not want to be anything like his father. He also knew that Hud had always been the man in his life he had looked up to. Jay whispered to Hud that he needed him to be so sorry that Jay would know Hud would never lie to him again. Hud told Jay he was that sorry. Jay said they were okay and took Hud’s full weight to help him up the stairs.

Hud, meanwhile, thought about how June’s love had changed his life. He decided he would love his child like that. He thought perhaps in 25 years there would be another reckoning where his children would confront him with what he had done wrong. He knew, however, that he would never leave them.
