The Only Black

This is a more minor symbol, but represents Maddie’s unique identity growing up in the UK, but also the author’s attempt to educate the reader on how this might feel. When she started with CGT, she realized she was the only Black person in the room and says “You have no idea (or maybe you do?) how this can make you feel” (14). When she goes to her interview at OTP she notices the same thing, wondering if they will hire her simply for diversity sake. When she attends Ben’s work function she notices that she is the only Black non-serving staff in the room. This symbol makes the reader aware of how it might feel to be in Maddie’s shoes - as the only Black - literally and metaphorically - growing up in a country and living in a space...
