Point of View

The novel is told from the first person perspective of the main protagonist - Madeleine (Maddie) Wright. Maddie is 25, female, Black, with parents who are originally from Ghana. Maddie has grown up in and currently lives in London - a mostly white city in a mostly white country. Maddie’s point of view is funny as she often notices the randomness and humorous moments of life around her. When she gets fired, for instance, she rides the train home and says to herself, “‘Fuck.’ I exhale. The man in a suit sitting two seats from me with grease on his tie looks up from his before -10:00 A.M. burger and says, ‘Same’” (46).
