The Word "Fag"

The word fag is a pejorative homophobic slur, and symbolizes hatred and discrimination against the queer community. This word shows how history is alive and present. Saadi first says this word to Reza, in that “You better not be a fag,” meant as a threat (11). Darryl calls Art this word at school as well, deliberately targeting Art. Art wants to reclaim it, “I’m allowed to use it . . . Because I am one” (51). Later on however, when he says this word in front of Judy’s Mom, she snaps, “I heard that word hissed like a dagger at my brother throughout his childhood, and I don’t want to hear it ever again” (344). Instead of pushing back, Art agrees, showing that even Art can change. This word shows that history matters, and how queer people have a target on their back, and a particular invective...
