Summary

In Chapter 49, Liam had seen a light on at the church and hoped it mean Father Cam had returned, and he encounters Cork who is obviously relieved that Liam is here. Liam sees Father Cam, his face streaked with charcoal and in obvious emotional pain. Cam reveals a deep guilt because he did not do more for Louise. He sought out Henry's advice and has been fasting in an effort to “cleanse” himself. He tells Liam he is considering leaving the ministry because the responsibility he feels is “suffocating” and he seems to accomplish nothing. Liam fully understands. Liam and Cam talk more, including Liam's feeling that anyone who tries to deal with the “darkness” alone will fail. He says the only hope is in helping each other.
