Georgie

Georgie is a television writer, wife, and mother in Los Angeles. She is nearing 40. Ever since she was a teenager, she knew she wanted to work in comedy. After college, she started writing for television shows, though for a while she considered performing herself. Her comedy writing partner is her long-time friend Seth. As the novel begins, Georgie and Seth have an opportunity to develop a show they have been writing since college.

Georgie married Neal, an extremely supportive father who is not happy with Georgie's career. Neal does not think comedy is all that useful, at least not in his own life. He is not a fan of Seth, who, when Georgie and Neal started dating he was jealous of. This relationship makes Georgie feel like she has to play intermediary between the two most important men in her life.
