Summary

In Chapter 21, Georgie and Heather arrive at the mall. While bra shopping, Georgie realizes that she needs to make things right with Neal or he might not drive to her house the next day. If he didn’t, she worries, would the past 15 years of her life be different? In 1998, when Neal left, Georgie had thought they were broken up for good. Even then, Georgie knew that Neal loved her but had wanted a different life than the one she was preparing for. She knows, though, that even if they were wrong for each other “she still wasn’t better off without him” (251).

The Christmas morning in 1998, Neal had surprised Georgie by showing up on her doorstep. She grabs him right away. Then, he drops to one knee and proposes to her, telling her that they would “make our own enough” (254).
