Point of View

The novel is written from the first person point of view of the protagonist, Jake. This point of view is helpful for the development of the novel because the novel is in large part about a journey that occurs within the heart of Jake. While there are elements of the plot in which Jake is pitted against other characters such as Bobby and even against Sam, the main conflict he faces is within himself. He has always believed in the importance of heroism and in the importance of fighting injustice. For much of the novel he sees this heroism primarily through military members who fought or fight in armed conflicts.
