Summary

Evelyn: Guatemala, 1992-2008. Evelyn’s story begins with descriptions of her childhood in a small village in Guatemala, raised by her grandmother Concepcion after her mother Miriam went to America to earn money to send back home. Evelyn’s father had also gone to America, but much earlier, and was never in contact. Evelyn’s eldest brother Gregorio became a member of a local, powerful gang, and was ultimately rejected by Concepcion: he did, however, stay in contact with Evelyn and the middle child, Andres, who dreamed of also going to America to earn money to send home. The family was watched over by the outspoken, compassionate Father Benito, who took charge in the aftermath of Gregorio’s gruesome death at the hands of other gang members who, in a note left on the body, said that he had betrayed them and...
