Summary

In Part II, Chapter 16, 12 hours later, Max and Sarah interrogate Rachel. No matter what tactic the agents take, Rachel insists upon her ignorance. She feigns shock at the news of David’s escape. She refuses the agents’ offer of immunity in exchange for her cooperation. Before leaving, she says she wants her lawyer.

In Chapter 17, Max and Sarah head to Newark “to catch a flight back up to Briggs” (143). En route, they discuss the case. They guess that the Mackenzies are involved. They cannot tell if the escape was “planned out in advance,” or if Rachel was always involved (145). She helped David flee, but they are unsure where and why.
