Summary

In Chapter 7, at her hotel, Rachel studies the photograph and considers telling Cheryl. She wonders if David believes Matthew is alive. Although doubt sets in, Rachel calls Cheryl. She tells her she wants to talk in person, inviting Cheryl over the following evening. She reveals that she went to Briggs.

In the middle of the night, Curly tugs David from his cell. He says they are going to the infirmary and that David must fill out paperwork first. Noticing “Curly is wearing gloves,” David realizes “something is definitely off” (65, 66). In a dark corner, Curly pulls a shiv on David. He is crying as he tries stabbing David’s stomach. David moves, and the shiv cuts his arm. The two wrestle with the blade. David calls for help. As Curly is lunging for him again, a voice interrupts the scuffle.
