Point of View

Hunting by Stars is written from a series of perspectives, but the novel never becomes completely omniscient. The author identifies the character in charge of the perspective at the beginning of each chapter, and the perspective remains focused on that character throughout that chapter. There are a few things that are seen from more than one perspective. For example, Rose believes that she and Derrick have left camp without letting anyone know where they are going. She does not expect it to be a secret because she has made it clear she wants to rescue French. The reader does not see this scene from Derrick's perspective at all. A later chapter is from the perspective of “The Family,” which means there are several characters who carry the perspective in that chapter.
