Chapter Nine: Old News Summary

Maggie pretends to be sick for the three following days after Jack kissed her. When she returns to school everyone is excited about an announcement that is about to be made. In the bathroom Maggie overhears Sharla crying because she has learned that she is not one of the Homecoming nominees. Just minutes later in homeroom the principal interrupts with the Homecoming nomination announcemtns. Maggie has been nominated. She's shocked and a little upset that her plan is backfiring.

Maggie learns that the school ran the interview that happened a few weeks back in the school newspaper. Instead of sounding bizarre and dorky, the article makes her sound hip and cool, confidant and free-spirited. Many people are now carrying character lunchboxes and backpacks, wearing galoshes, quirky dresses and jumpsuits.
