Summary

Part 3 “XX42/XX62” (159) consists of Chapter 21 “Wind Wind Wind Wind Wind” (161). Ba's ghost speaks to Lucy. He tells her that he was orphaned as a baby and brought up in the camp of a Native American tribe in the hills. When he was 12 years old, he found his first piece of gold. Seven years later, settlers arrived in the West and began prospecting. Ba attracted the attention of one of the prospectors, who hired him for a project—to communicate with the 200 people the man had just brought over on a ship from across the ocean to build a railroad. Ba was chosen because he looked like those people, but he did not actually speak their language. Ma was one of the 200.
