Summary

In Chapter 7, “Meat” (51), Sam and Lucy wake to the smell of meat cooking. They see a fire in the distance and approach cautiously. They discover a man lying on the ground. Presuming him dead, Lucy moves closer to investigate and the man reaches out and grabs her wrist. The man yells at Sam to stay where she is and drop the pistol she is holding. Realizing they are just children, he releases Lucy's wrist and offers to share his food. As they eat, the man asks where Sam and Lucy come from and they all discuss the land. He mentions that there is a town nearby called Sweetwater and asks Sam (mistaking her for a boy) if she would like to travel with him to a trade fair.
