Summary

Volume II, Chapter I began earlier that Saturday. Hope noticed a local woman selling moccasins at Governor Winthrop’s mansion, who quietly revealed herself as Magawisca in disguise. Magawisca asked Hope to meet her discreetly that evening in the cemetery. There, Magawisca disclosed Nelema’s dying wish to reunite the sisters. She assured Hope that her sister was safe, loved, and happy as Oneco’s wife, but Hope grieved for the sister she knew. Magawisca required Hope to maintain their secret and meet them alone per her father’s wishes, to which Hope reluctantly agreed. Hope heard a voice in the nearby trees as a storm ensued. Sir Philip approached after Hope hopped the fence, insisting upon walking her home despite Hope’s refusals.
