Summary

In Volume I, Chapter VII, Mononotto’s group traveled to a village by the Housatonic River. Mononotto was determined to kill Everell. They stopped at the secluded village of an “agricultural tribe” (51). When Mononotto met with their chief, Everell was separated from the group. Magawisca and the others were housed in the wigwam of an elderly woman. One Mohawk guard remained awake with Magawisca, who tended to the woman with a sleep remedy. Upon daybreak, Magawisca pleaded for the guard to let her go. The old woman cried out that as she died, the man must remove the mat from the door.
