Summary

In Chapter 10, Dicey and the children begin their fifth day at Abigail's house. Dicey has the children begin organizing the barn – one of the few chores she can accomplish in the rain. Will and Claire arrive. Dicey tells them they are “Okay … but not terrific” (367). Dicey introduces Abigail as “Mrs. Tillerman.” Abigail invites them to sit on the porch. Will asks why Abigail does not have a phone. Abigail says someone called her with news her son Samuel had died in the war. Though she knew it did not help anything, she took the phone to town and threw it through the phone company's window. Claire reveals they have four used but good bicycles for the four children. The members of the circus chipped in to buy them. The children take the bikes to the barn and thank Will and Claire. Dicey...
