Summary

In Chapter 4, the children sleep late. Dicey caught five fish the previous day and left them in the water overnight. They clean and cook the fish, put out the fire, and gather their supplies. Dicey does not rush to leave. They cut across fields and discover a circus. Dicey warns that they cannot spend any money but agrees they can look around. A tall, angry woman named Claire emerges from a tent with a bunch of small dogs. She shouts at them to leave. When she threatens to call the police, a tall Black man, dressed entirely in black, intervenes. He identifies himself as Will Hawkins, the owner of the circus.
